Interactive map of the Boston Marathon: Viewers’ guide

Boston Marathon, which happens in April every year, draws a large crowd from all over the world. This “viewer’s guide to Boston Marathon course” was created by piecing together a multiple maps that gets published every year in the Boston Globe’s “Marathon preview” section.

The interactive holds a lot of information accumulated over the years by the preview section. I originally created this on-line presentation in 2008, but made some major modification to enhance the users’ experience by adding a “Expected arrival time calculator.” The calculator allows users to input a friend’s expected marathon time and calculate roughly what time to be where. Most of data used on this interactive is stored in a separate xml file to allow for simple text updates and modification.
